Tennessee Slow Cooker Apple Butter Recipe
When I lived up North I don’t ever recall encountering apple butter, but it may have been there and somehow I managed to miss it. It’s unthinkable, considering I believe the North grows the absolute best apples, that they could be denied the pleasure of good apple butter! Today I am sharing my crockpot apple butter recipe with everyone but especially my northern friends, in case you haven’t had the pleasure of enjoying it yet.

Before I spill it all, I have to share my first encounter with Tennessee Apple Butter because it was a bit weird. I had been driving down the road in Jonesborough, Tennessee on a beautiful fall day when suddenly I saw a large group of people gathered in a field congregating around a huge kettle. They were taking turns stirring the contents with a giant paddle. I was instantly curious.
Honestly, my first thought was of witches. The kettle looked to me like a giant cauldron. I had never seen one so big. Were these people actually making a potion? Hello Halloween!
I’d been here long enough to know that witchcraft in broad daylight in the middle of an open field in East Tennesee was extremely unlikely so I slowed down a bit confused. That was when I noticed with relief a cardboard sign that said – Apple Butter!
I pulled over. As soon as I opened the door I could smell it. Sweet, tangy, spicy apples. The people were excited to have a newbie among their midst. They even let me give the golden mixture a stir. As I pulled the heavy paddle through the apples the scent enhanced and it smelled like heaven on earth. I found out they had been it all day. Six hours already and it still wasn’t done. But they were selling jars that were. I tasted it and well let’s just say, it’s been a staple in my house ever since.
I’m so glad they weren’t witches.
It’s good on toast, amazing on pork loin, excellent on chicken, fantastic on Blondies, great in pie, and so easy to make. Let me tell you how to make yours.
Apple Butter Ingredients
- 4 pounds of apples
- 1 1/4 cup fresh apple cider
- 2 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp pumpkin spice (or nutmeg if you prefer)
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup Maple Syrup
How To Make Crock Pot Apple Butter
Wash apples. You do not need to peel your apples. Cut in half and decore. If you don’t have a decorer don’t use your knife. You wouldn’t believe how many people cut themselves that way. Grab a spoon and work out the core. Cube your apples.
Pour your apples into your crockpot and add all remaining ingredients.
Put your slow cooker on low and cook for eight hours stirring every hour.
Using an emersion blender (or regular blender if necessary) blend until smooth.
Continue cooking on low for another two hours.
Check flavor to see if you want to add any more sweetener or spice. If not let cool and then store in the fridge for up to three months. Freeze for up to a year.
What Recipes To Make With Your Apple Butter
I can tell you the next two recipes that I am making. First, Brown Butter Apple Blondies with Cinnamon Maple Glaze from Tieghan at Half Baked Harvest. And then the Apple Butter Pie I told you about in my post – Falling For Pie – Five Fall Pies You’ll Love.
So, there you have it. Time to head the Orchard and get some fresh apples! You notice I didn’t tell you which apples to use because I think its a personal preference thing. Most people recommend Honey Crisp, but you do you.
