New Year’s Resolutions or Not?
Monthly Categories to Commit To This New Year
With a new year before us, there are many resolutions we could make. We could vow to lose weight, or exercise more, or eat more greens, or drink more water. We could commit to spending more time with our friends and family. We could promise ourselves we will read more books and drastically reduce our screen time. It’s easy to make a resolution. It’s much harder to keep one. At least longer than that first week or two.

So this year I am mixing things up. I am going to resolve to live life to the fullest in whatever form that may take. I want to enjoy all of life’s little pleasures. I need to savor moments because they slip by far too fast. Here is the plan. Instead of making a resolution, I am committing to small lifestyle changes.
Small but significant changes. The embracing of the creative. More time with the wild which waits just outside. Closer attention paid to the relationships I am blessed with. More attempts at capturing the lovely or freezing time whether with words or images. More music. More laughter. More flavors. More stories. More celebrating. More faith. I invite you to join me.
I am going to focus on one of these goals each month starting with embracing the creative. Join me by subscribing and I will post ideas and suggestions for this journey every weekend. Let’s see what we can do here.
Happy New Year – Ideas to do bite-size New Years Resolutions, a new one every month to keep the excitement and interest alive as month after month you become a better you and have fun while you are at it.
January: More Creativity – Arts, Crafts, Baking, Painting, Writing! Creating in every way I can think of. Including at least a few ways that I have never tried before.
February: Focus On Relationships – Spouse, Children, Parents, Grandparents, Siblings, Friends, Neighbors. Make time for date nights, family gatherings, double dates with friends, sister time, and day trips with my son.
March: Capturing The Lovely/Freezing Time – Keeping either a written or a photo journal. Once a day focus on capturing the moments I love most.
April: More Music – Whether this means listening to music or playing music or even writing music, this is my focus. Attend concerts, musicals, or symphonies.
May: More laughter. – Let’s make sure we find a lot of really good laughs this May. Whether that means listening to comedians, attending a comedy performance (Gatlinburg offers several), reading a funny book, or binging my way through a full series of a comedy.
June: Stopping To Smell The Roses – Bring on the flowers. Whether this means committing to some new house plants (cactuses count), visiting botanical gardens, going to a plant exchange, taking nature walks and identifying the local flora, painting or drawing flowers or trees, visiting the flower shop, and picking out a bouquet just because, or looking into which blooms are edible and preparing a few of those dishes.
July: Embracing My Culture – This means learning about who my ancestors were and what cultures await me on the family tree. I’d like to learn more about where I come from, how they lived life, what foods and music they enjoyed, and where on the map my family has called home.
August: Self-Care – This means a focus on taking care of myself; mind, body, and spirit. Focusing a week on how to take care of my mental health best. Then a week looking into finding ways I can be physically active that I also enjoy. Then a week focusing on my faith and prayer life. In the final week, I intend to look into ways I can combine all of these discoveries and create tangible changes to improve all three.
September: Connect With Nature – Climbing mountains, taking nature walks, attending classes at Nature Centers, learning about survival, kayaking, camping, reading a related book, watching movies or documentaries focused on nature and wildlife…
October: Flavors – Taking time to experiment with all of the fall flavors and international dishes. Looking to try foods I have never tasted before and to prepare foods I have never served before.
November: Gratitude – Focusing on all the reasons I have to be thankful. Taking time to appreciate and count my blessings. Writing thank-you notes, buying or making small gifts to show appreciation, and making a gratitude jar.
December: Faith – I intend to focus on my faith. Start a new daily devotional, keep a prayer journal, do a bible study. Also, attend more than just Sunday service. Get involved with church opportunities to serve. Yes, December will be a month where I intentionally explore and practice my faith.
