Summer Crafts That Encourage Reading
Book Covers:
For older kids and teens, these book covers from Ruby Murrays Musings which are made from woven map pieces are a fun project and perfect for covering a notebook they are taking on a trip. For younger kids, go old school and teach them how to cover their books in paper bags and then color them! These step-by-step instructions from WikiHow can walk you through that process.
Bookmarks
I’ve shared similar origami bookmarks with you before but these ice cream cone bookmarks from Maison ZiZou are especially perfect for summer readers!

Crafts That Get Kids Outside

Rock Painting
Rock painting is a great way to get everyone outside. First, to find the perfect rocks for painting and then once completed, to hide them safely along the trail. Be sure to use non-toxic paints and choose stones that will not disturb an existing habitat. For some really cute ideas and inspiration visit Rock Painting 101.

Leaf and Flower Press
It’s so much fun to gather flowers, leaves, and even grasses to bring home and press. Whether you make pressed flower bookmarks like these from Buggy and Buddy, or these beautiful framed pressed flowers from Lily Ardor.

Leaf Painting
Leaf painting can be done in so many ways. You can paint the leaf itself and press it to the paper as we showed you in this post all about Fall Pressed Leaf Wreaths. Or, you can paint the actual leaf using it as a canvas as taught by Simple Fun For Kids.

Upcycled Summer Craft Ideas
This is one of our favorite crafts! We made these years ago for Earth Day and they are still looking great hanging up in our homeschool room! Beautiful and easy to make, you can create individual butterflies or string them together to make a beautiful garland.

DIY Pretty Plant Pots
Whether you hand your kids some terracotta plant pots and some non-toxic paint or upcycle little play dough containers and decorate them with washi tape like Projects With Kids, this craft is dual purpose. Kids get to create and watch something they planted grow.
Summer-Themed Paper Plate Craft
I love this snail craft from Toot’s Mom Is Tired because I think the pom poms make it extra adorable. You can also use beads, tissue paper shapes, or torn construction paper pieces too.
Crafts for Kids Who Love Animals
This is such a simple yet fun craft for kids. They color the free worksheet and then create adorable little bees using their fingerprints! So cute!
Grab some crayons, some scissors, some glue, and this printout, and kids can create their own unique paper crown!
