Five of The Best Summer Activities That Provide Educational Value

One- Summer Reading!

Summer reading keeps imaginations alive, reduces screen time, and improves language and vocabulary for your kids. So, activity guides like the one below help kids stick with the story. All while enhancing their retention skills as they pull details from the story into their everyday life.

Grab them a Book Club Study with fun activities like this one for the Prairie Thief. This activity guide includes recipes for dried apple pie, molasses cornbread, and mason jar butter! Fun activities like making bird seed feeders and blackberry ink are included. Art projects supply creative play. Educational worksheets introduce kids to the animals that call the prairie home. Writing and poetry reading are also included. Plus much more! Learn more here.

Two – Art Time

Another of our favorite summer activities is art time. I am grateful for every form of artistic expression. Art allows our kids to express themselves, improves motor skills, supports cognitive development, sharpens their visual learning skills, and much more!

Personally, I am a fan of watercolor! I have always used Let’s Make Art in my homeschool and over summer vacation. Creating is such an essential part of learning and is also an effective tool in helping to develop good mental health. I believe every kid deserves some art time as part of their daily life.

Three – Gardening

Gardening teaches a lot about science as kids watch their plants change and grow. They learn what it takes to guide seedlings into larger plants. Problem-solving is addressed as kids learn how to overcome challenges. Whether the challenge is not enough water, too much sun, deterring pests, figuring out how much and what to feed their plants, etc.

This pick for best summer activities for kids also teaches about responsibility and reward. As your child’s diligent care yields fruit and vegetables they create opportunities to share and prepare. Ideally, we push this lesson all the way through to completion with food preparation as kids learn how to prepare dishes, jams, salads, and such with the fruit of their labor.

Four – Start Nature Journaling

I know I have mentioned this before and I even shared a whole post about how to begin a practice of nature journaling with your family. But I keep saying it because I know the good it can bring into your life and the life of your child.

Nature journaling encourages your kids to slow down and observe, to look closer, to seek out details, repetition, and patterns in nature. Additionally, journaling inspires a love for the outdoors which will love them back in mental health benefits that exceed just about every other practice.

Five – Backyard Camping

Backyard camping allows kids to create an environment that is of their own making. This pick for best summer activities teaches kids how to pitch tents, clean up after themselves, and prepare age-appropriate snacks and meals. They spend nightfall gathered around a fire pit practicing singing or storytelling or huddled under the sky star gazing.

This is great family bonding time! While it all happens in the safety of your own backyard it feels like a grand foreign adventure. Life skills lessons at their best!
